White's Wood Lane Community Junior School - Our School Grounds Project

The project was started with the aim of getting children practically involved in the growing and running of a garden. We also started the project to promote learning outdoors as well as enhancing cross-curricular links.

We involved children from across the school to try and design a garden, which could be integrated into our playground area. A garden area was then created using a range of the children’s designs. Children from each class were then involved in planting and growing in the garden and a “garden gang” was formed in order to maintain all our hard work.

As a result of our involvement with Eco-Schools, our school environment has been vastly improved. We now have a fantastic area for children to go into at break time and lunch time with seating and a willow weaving. It is somewhere for the children to both relax and keep calm, being regularly used by all age groups. We have invited the media to come in and have also been videoed whilst planting, which has been posted on the Gainsborough Standard website. In addition to our garden, we have developed a growing area outside and have  recently harvested carrots and sweet corn, as well as growing herbs in classrooms. Next year, we have plans to pass on the produce to our school kitchen for use in school dinners.

In terms of resources, we try to save money where possible and have been involved in the “Morrisons lets grow” project, which has been warmly welcomed across the school. We have managed to collect a fantastic number of vouchers to purchase equipment for our growing projects. As well as the involvement of the children, the staff and parents also support our project. Parents have been involved in demonstrating how to plant and grow potatoes and I have just written a letter with the garden gang appealing for more help from parents next year.
