Getting Started

Introduction

The Eco-Schools programme is the largest sustainable schools programme in the world. Currently, the Programme is running in 43 countries around the world, involving 27,000 schools, 6,000,000 students, 400,000 teachers and 4,000 local authorities.

Keep Britain Tidy run Eco-Schools in England, there are currently over 12,100 schools registered, over 55% of schools in England!

Becoming part of this international programme is simple. Registration is free for schools and can be completed online.

A list of registered schools can be found on our website via the school search function.

Once registered schools will receive regular newsletters and email bulletins with access to national and regional information, competitions and funding. Only registered schools can apply for an award.

The Eco-Schools Programme

The Eco-Schools programme has a simple framework, this framework provides the tools to promote and develop sustainability throughout the school.

The framework consists of 7 elements:

  1. Action team
  2. Environmental review
  3. Action plan
  4. Eco-Code
  5. Involving the whole school and wider community
  6. Linking to the curriculum
  7. Monitoring and evaluation

The framework supports schools to work on different environmental and sustainable topics. There are 9 topics that Eco-Schools in England can work on, these are:

  1. Transport
  2. Waste
  3. Water
  4. Litter
  5. School Grounds
  6. Healthy Living
  7. Energy
  8. Biodiversity
  9. Global Perspective

Registered schools work towards a Bronze Award, Silver Award and ultimately the Green Flag. There is a logical progression through the awards and the work required for each award is described in the award overview.

First steps

Once registered there are 3 initial steps for schools to undertake:

Form an Eco-Schools action team

Conduct an environmental review

Develop an action plan

A template for the environmental review and action plan can be found in the Links and resources page.

Once these 3 steps have been completed the schools can begin working towards their Bronze award by focusing on the actions of one of the topics.

When schools are ready they can apply for their Bronze and Silver Awards through the website which are self accredited. There is a more formal application form and assessment that involves getting to Green Flag status.

The Pod

The Pod is an interactive on-line resource for teachers of key stages 2 and 3 children. It sits at the heart of EDF Energy’s Programme for Greener Schools. The Eco-Schools team are working with the Pod to develop more activities and resources for Pod users to help schools become more sustainable.

By using the Pod activities you will be automatically working towards your Bronze, Silver and Green flag awards on the Eco-School programme.

For more information on how Eco-Schools can benefit from the Pod please visit the Pod page.
