Thanks to the continuing support of Currys as part of the ‘Switched on Communities’ scheme Eco-Schools throughout the UK have the opportunity to apply for funding to help them progress towards the prestigious Green Flag award.
Over 250 schools have applied for a grant through the ‘Switched on Communities’ scheme in the last two years. The number of schools applying has made judging at appraisal panel meetings a very competitive process. From the 152 schools who applied in year two, 55 were eventually successful and together they shared a pot of almost £100,000. Items funded by the scheme in year two included large items such as wind turbines and solar panels to smaller items such as energy saving light bulbs, light sensors and draught excluders.
Applications for grants up to a maximum of £5,000 are considered for new or existing projects that create positive change and development within a school on the themes of energy and water. Priority will be given to projects that clearly demonstrate an energy efficiency element or identify technology solutions to environmental improvements. Please note that existing Green Flag schools are not eligible to apply for a grant.
The ‘Switched on Communities’ scheme also provides a selection of free energy saving white goods (those displaying the highest Energy Saving Logo rating) such as fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers and energy efficient light bulbs. Schools may also apply for energy saving equipment such as energy efficient lamps, new heating controls, thermostatic radiator valves, insulation and draught stripping, “switch it off” stickers and posters.
