ThamesWatch 2010
ThamesWatch 2010
The annual ThamesWatch project is taking place 19th April – 30th May (First half of summer term) this year.
ThamesWatch is a wildlife project that has been running for the last 2 years, the main aim being to get children out and about exploring the Thames and experiencing the vast array of wildlife it has to offer - perfect for a school trip.
This year, the charity Buglife – The Invertebrate Conservation Trust has joined the founders www.riverthames.co.uk and the RSPB.
The project will be expanding for primary school aged children to include birds, bugs, other animals and trees- all linked to an environmental project.
The website has been re-designed to include information on the 4 topics, birds, bugs, wildlife & trees and an online registration form. Please visit: www.riverthames.co.uk/thameswatch
Prizes await the lucky groups drawn from the entries, so far prize donors include:
The Pirate Castle
Thames River Services
London Duck Tours
London Waterbus
J.G.F Passenger Boats
River & Rowing Museum
Stephen Worsfold, director of the River Thames Guide Ltd which publishes www.riverthames.co.uk said: “Our rivers are the veins and arteries that keep our environment healthy but we largely ignore them. In its own modest way, ThamesWatch aims to showcase for the young ones the exciting and the tranquil aspects of the world along our beautiful waterways.”
Vicky Kindemba Buglife’s Freshwater Officer said: “Rivers are full of amazing bugs for children to discover and explore”
The RSPB’s Tim Webb said: “Our waterways have improved and wildlife is returning, with otters and seals now regularly spotted in the Thames and its tributaries. A gentle riverside stroll can quite often be rewarded with a flash of turquoise from a patrolling kingfisher; memories that stay with you forever.”
