EDF Energy

EDFThe project developed by EDF Energy is part of the overall educational programme being delivered by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The Pod aims to be the first port of call for any teacher, pupil, parent or governor who wishes to make their school greener and more sustainable. It will contain a range of practical activities, specially designed to help schools lower their carbon footprint and cut down on energy and water usage. The activities will range from small-scale projects such as switching off unnecessary lights to large initiatives such as installing solar panels. Sharing ideas is at the heart of The Pod. Whenever a school starts an activity on the site, we will ask them to blog about what they are doing, sharing images, movies, podcasts and written work. These will then be accessible to other registered schools who wish to start a similar activity. The Pod will also aim to benefit the wider community by encouraging pupils and their parents to make similar changes in their own homes. The intended audience for the site will initially be 7 to 14-year-olds but, as the site develops, the scope will expand to include both older and younger pupils.

Medals

Successful schools will be celebrated. When you finish an activity, you will be awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal depending on how much energy or water you have saved and how much work you have put into your blog.

Activities

The Pod registration site will be launched on June 16 th. So register your school with the programme and try out the sample activity ‘Goodbye Standby’. This activity encourages schools to switch off electronic devices when they are no longer in use. We also have an example of an activity blog provided by an ambassador school.

The full programme will formally launch on September 18th, and we will have nine more activities on the site that you can immediately start running in your school.

Pod partners
As well as LOCOG we have worked with Eden Project to deliver the programme, and we also plan to form partnerships with other like-minded organisations. In September, we will also announce a number of other initiatives that will run alongside The Pod website. This will include new funding opportunities for schools and an awards ceremony for schools which have carried out the most successful and innovative sustainable projects.

Marmax Products Ltd
Marmax Products Ltd manufacture high quality outdoor furniture and boardwalk made from 100% UK waste plastic. The recycled plastic does not naturally biodegrade, a fact that makes it very bad for landfill disposal, and very good for outdoor furniture.
Because the recycled plastic does not rot, it requires no painting or staining, reducing maintenance costs and eliminating the need for chemical preservatives.

An adult picnic bench contains the equivalent of 2000 milk bottles, saving them from landfill and creating a useful product from the waste plastic that everyone is encouraged to save. Marmax Products Ltd can furnish the outdoor classroom with sustainable products. Picnic benches can be fitted with gameboard tops, adventure cabins and sandpits create play areas. Raised beds provide growing areas wherever needed. Choose from a wide range of colours and designs, in Adult and Junior sizes, including wheelchair-friendly picnic benches.

The Jane Goodall Institute
Dr. Jane Goodall DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, began her landmark study of chimpanzees in Tanzania in June 1960 under Dr Louis Leakey. In 1977, Dr. Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI). Today JGI is a global organization supporting the research at Gombe in addition to many other programs for research, community development, conservation programs and the Roots & Shoots education programme.

Roots & Shoots
The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen through empowering young people with the inspiration and tools to make a difference - for our communities, for animals and for the environment. It is a unique programme that channels the energy, enthusiasm and commitment of young people to an extremely positive cause – making the quality of life better for people and animals and ensuring a better future for our planet. Our key aims that we strive for are as follows:

Action – practical for all living things
Educational and fun
Compassionate – values based
Inspirational – Every Individual Can Make a Difference

The possibilities are endless with Roots & Shoots. There are no rigid requirements and no limit to the imagination. The projects are fun for all involved, and the tools and resources that Roots & Shoots provides are easily applicable. With thousands of young volunteers, the Roots & Shoots network branches out across the globe, connecting youth of all ages who share a common desire to help make our world a better place.

The programme began in 1991 when 16 local teenagers met with Dr. Jane Goodall on her back porch in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Dr. Jane was impressed by their compassion, their energy and their desire to develop a grassroots style solution to problems. Dr Jane’s faith and hope in the determination of young people is, when informed and empowered, that they can indeed change the world. Our program not only motivates young people to learn about pertinent issues facing our local and global communities, but helps them implement their own projects as a means of solving them.

Eco Eco'le

A new concept for your school’s Sustainability Learning Centre ‘Sustainable development will not just be a subject taught in the classroom: it will be in its bricks and mortar and the way the school uses and even generates its own power. Our students won’t just be told about sustainable development, they will see and work within it: a living, learning place in which to explore what a sustainable lifestyle means’. Prime Minister Tony Blair, 2004.

The Eco Eco’le Sustainability Learning Centre provides all pupils with a focus point for their learning about environmental and sustainable matters. All these are vital areas for pupils to be more aware of, to inspire them to be good stewards of a world in a challenging future.

The provision of a separate and stimulating Learning Centre will send out the right messages about the importance of this area of learning, both for pupils and for the wider community.

Often, pupils live in flats and other accommodation where Green activities are not possible and many families have yet to become as involved with Green issues as they might. Having a designated area as a Green Centre enables teachers to expand children’s growing awareness of environmental and sustainable issues, and provides an area to store and use associated resources.

The Eco Eco’le can house gardening, composting and recycling facilities and water butts and has its own greenhouse. It can be a base for the school ‘allotment’ encouraging children to grow organic fruit and vegetables. Most vitally, it will help to nurture the fertile minds of our future generation of ‘Eco Warriors’.

With its ‘living roof’ and renewable energy systems, utilising solar panels and other technology, the Eco Eco’le, made from ethically sourced wood, is a statement of a school’s serious commitment to sustainability.

Rebecca Morch Publishing Limited
As a husband and wife team, we have set up Rebecca Morch Publishing Limited, in order to bring Rebecca’s book, ‘Who Will Save Us?’ to the public. Our aim is to create awareness, understanding and positive action with regard to climate change, so we have also set up ‘The Who Will Save Us? Children’s and Young People’s Project.’ ‘Who Will Save Us?’ is an inspirational book for children and their adults, which is being successfully used by both primary and secondary schools. It takes a positive and empowering approach to the issues of climate change and helping to resolve it.

The book contains a heartfelt and engaging story about the penguins of Antarctica, which is followed by a concise and comprehensive section on what we can all do to help, from energy saving to fair trade, and a listing of useful organisations. Supporting statements from WWF-UK, Oxfam, Sustrans, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, The Wildlife Trusts and I Count are presented on the cover. The foreword has been written by Pen Hadow, the polar explorer.

“A beautifully composed and illustrated book that will inspire children and adults alike. A real example of how to explore what it means to be an active global citizen.” Oxfam. The project offers children and young people an educational and empowering opportunity to help resolve climate change and to help with other related issues. The process involves children’s and young people’s schools and groups being able to buy in the books at a reduced rate, and sell them at the retail price, thereby making £2.50 per book. This profit becomes the children’s/young people’s budget. They then ‘work together’ (following the message of the book) to research climate change, question, discuss and decide how to spend their budget to help.

This project encourages good citizenship and many other skills. It is already succeeding in helping to develop sustainability in schools and the community. Nationally, primary and secondary schools are taking part in this project with inspirational ideas and actions. Book details: Published by Rebecca Morch Publishing Limited - 48 full colour illustrated pages - paperback - UK production - Forest Stewardship Council 50% recycled paper - Vegetable based inks - Biodegradable laminate on the cover. Retail price: £5.99
